The age of the world population is increasing. Why? Increased life expectancy (in part due to medical science) and a global reduced birth rate.
As people age the cost of healthcare increases. This is true on a global basis.
Many anti-aging regimens concentrate on hormonal regulation to keep people “young” and enhance their sense of well-being. Of these, Testosterone replacement therapy ranks in the highest category in the United States.
Females are at the disadvantage in terms of hormonal regulation. Post-menopause the drop in estrogen for females is not only dramatic, it is abrupt! For men, it is a different story.
A man’s testosterone level decreases steadily (barring disease) over time and not as abruptly as women. This results in late-onset hypogonadism. Testosterone replacement therapy to the rescue! Anti-aging has become synonymous with testosterone replacement therapy for both men and women. But it is safe?
Testosterone creams and injections might mitigate most of the symptoms of hypogonadism. (Google: “Adams Test Testosterone” for further information). However it is the opinion of HARF that testosterone replacement should be prescribed by a physician only in select patients.
Testosterone replacement should not be considered as an anti-aging treatment.
The FDA has issued a warning regarding side-effects of testosterone administration. On the other hand, guidelines and reports from many medical societies such as the Endocrine Society seem to be encouraging.
In matters regarding hormone administration it is extremely important for both the patient and physician to weigh the risks and potential benefits.
